New Delhi: Punjab Kings suffered their third consecutive defeat in IPL 2026 after a costly fielding display allowed Sunrisers Hyderabad to secure a commanding 33 run victory and move to the top of the points table.
Punjab Kings dropped three catches and missed a routine stumping opportunity during the match, prompting head coach Ricky Ponting to describe the repeated errors as a “virus” affecting the team throughout the season.
Batting first on a batting friendly surface, Sunrisers Hyderabad piled up a massive 235 for 4 in 20 overs. Heinrich Klaasen continued his outstanding form with a powerful 69 off 43 balls, while Ishan Kishan smashed 55 from 32 deliveries. Both batters benefited from dropped chances that proved extremely costly for Punjab.
Openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head laid the platform with an explosive start, adding a quick half century partnership. Nitish Reddy later provided the finishing touch with an unbeaten 29 off just 13 balls.
Punjab spinner Yuzvendra Chahal endured a frustrating evening as catches were dropped off his bowling and a stumping opportunity was missed. Despite the fielding lapses around him, he finished with respectable figures of 1 for 32 on a flat wicket.
Speaking after the match, Ponting admitted the team’s poor catching had become a recurring issue. He said the side had worked extensively on fielding in recent training sessions but failed to deliver under pressure during the game.
In reply, Punjab Kings never truly threatened the target despite a brilliant unbeaten century from Cooper Connolly, who scored 107 off 59 balls. The lack of support from the rest of the batting lineup left Punjab well short as they finished on 202 for 7.
The victory pushed Sunrisers Hyderabad to 14 points, strengthening their playoff hopes, while Punjab Kings were left searching for answers after another disappointing performance in the field.
