New Delhi: The arrest of an alleged Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) linked module in West Bengal has uncovered what investigators believe is an attempt by Pakistan based terror handlers to expand intelligence gathering operations deep inside India. According to the ongoing investigation, the suspects were allegedly tasked with monitoring high profile individuals, tracking major public events and collecting information that could be used for future operations.
The West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) arrested the accused in Kolkata after uncovering what officials describe as a network with alleged links to Pakistan based handlers. Investigators believe the primary objective at this stage was intelligence collection and the creation of operational capabilities rather than carrying out an immediate attack.
Forensic analysis of digital devices seized during the operation allegedly revealed encrypted communication between the accused and handlers operating under aliases such as Abid Jatt 333, Uzair, Rana and Hamad. Authorities suspect these individuals are connected to Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Shahzad Bhatti network. The conversations were reportedly conducted through encrypted messaging platforms, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Element X and Session.
According to investigators, one of the accused was allegedly instructed to monitor major national events and procure genuine police uniforms. Officials suspect the uniforms were intended to help operatives impersonate law enforcement personnel and infiltrate student protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
The STF is examining whether any operatives were ultimately deployed to Delhi or whether the alleged plan remained at the preparation stage. Investigators believe the objective was to observe demonstrations, create unrest, provoke violence and gather intelligence that could support future terror activities.
The probe has also expanded to examine an alleged ISI and JeM linked network involved in collecting intelligence on political leaders and police officials, using honey traps to obtain sensitive information and preparing for potential disruptive activities. Authorities have stated that the investigation remains ongoing, and further action will depend on the evidence collected during the course of the probe.
