POVROIM: Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza was elected the Deputy Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, defeating opposition candidate Delilah Lobo 24-12.
The ruling polled 24 votes (minus Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar), Opposition polled 12.
Aam Aadmi party MLAs – Capt Venzy Viegas, Cruz Silva and Revolutionary Goans MLA Viresh Borkar, abstained from voting.
Congress took a dig at the three MLAs for abstaining from voting, saying “the mystery of President’s polls cross-voting was solved.
“Cross voting during Presidential elections reflected today during the election of Dy Speaker. A & B team of BJP stands exposed. After all, it’s AAPkeBJParivar. Mystery of 3 votes stands solved,” said Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) Amit Patkar tweeted.
During presidential polls, Draupadi Murmu bagged 28 votes while the Opposition polled 12.
BJP’s strength in Goa is 25, and the Opposition has 15, which meant three Opposition MLAs had cross-voted.
