PANAJI: The Chairman of the Kannada Development Authority (KDA), Purushottama Bilimale, has appealed to the Union Government and the Karnataka Government to step in over concerns surrounding the future of Kannada-medium schools in Goa.
In representations sent to the Union Education Ministry and the Karnataka Government, Bilimale expressed concern over reports that some Kannada-medium schools in Goa could face closure. He argued that such a move would adversely affect the Kannada-speaking community and the educational rights of a linguistic minority.
Bilimale said Kannada-medium institutions have served generations of students in Goa, particularly families living in border regions and areas with sizeable Kannada-speaking populations. He maintained that preserving these schools is essential for protecting the language and cultural identity of the community.
The KDA chairman also questioned remarks attributed to Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, saying language diversity should be protected and that educational reforms should not come at the cost of minority language institutions.
He further urged the Karnataka Government to engage with the Goa Government through dialogue and send a delegation to discuss the issue, with the aim of ensuring that Kannada-medium schools continue to operate.
