MARGAO: The record for the longest drumstick grown was broken by Aquem-Margao resident Laximan Nilkanth Wagle, who grew a 49-inch drumstick in a tiny plastic drum filled with soil at his house. These drumsticks were grown by Laximan, who grows a wide variety of vegetables in his garden, without the use of conventional growing techniques.
The drumstick saplings were given to Laximan by his friend, who grew them inside a drum as opposed to on the ground. After a year, it took the drumsticks five months to grow. It began growing so quickly that the tip of the drumstick came into contact with the ground.
The drumstick had grown to almost 49 inches in length, and Laximan chopped it off before it touched the ground for fear that it would spoil.
He said that his son was determined to make a record by recommending this unusual fruit to the Book of Records. The director of the Directorate of Agriculture, Nevil Alphonso, informed me that he would send three representatives to complete the check.
“The officers examined the drumsticks after surveying the facility. They measured it and provided me with a certificate as proof. The head of the Book of Records received the certificate through mail. The previous record was 46 inches, and my measurement was 49 inches,” he added
Laximan Wagle says, “I still regret cutting the drumstick because it would have grown longer.”
