New Delhi: Mamata Banerjee has firmly refused to resign from the Chief Minister’s post despite mounting political pressure and criticism following recent developments in West Bengal. Addressing party MLAs at a meeting in Kolkata, the Trinamool Congress chief declared that she was prepared to face dismissal if necessary.
“Let them dismiss me. I want this to be a black day,” Banerjee said while reiterating her decision to remain in office.
The Trinamool Congress leadership also announced plans to move court over incidents of post poll violence reported since April 29. Banerjee accused opponents of creating confusion around the political situation and stressed that her party would continue its protests.
In a bid to maintain discipline within the party ranks, Banerjee warned leaders against making statements publicly against the Trinamool Congress. She announced the formation of a disciplinary committee to monitor and act against dissenting voices within the organisation.
The political tension escalated further after senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari dismissed claims of widespread post poll violence in the state. He stated that only isolated incidents had occurred and claimed they were far less severe than the violence witnessed after the 2021 assembly elections. He also assured strict action against those involved in any disturbances.
Banerjee has continued to question the election process and blamed the Election Commission for her party’s defeat. She alleged irregularities and referred to recent election outcomes in several states where opposition alliances lost to the BJP.
The ongoing constitutional debate over her refusal to resign has triggered intense political discussion. While there is no explicit constitutional procedure dealing with such a situation, legal experts suggest that the Governor has the authority to dismiss a Chief Minister who no longer commands majority support.
The current West Bengal Assembly term ends on May 7, leaving limited time for a political resolution. Several BJP leaders, including Himanta Biswa Sarma, have openly demanded Banerjee’s dismissal as the standoff continues to deepen.
