PANAJI: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Luizinho Faleiro on Tuesday resigned from the Rajya Sabha, citing personal reasons, three years and seven months ahead of his term.
Faleiro has also tendered his resignation from the Trinamool Congress Party.
Faleiro’s resignation has led to speculation about who would be Trinamool’s choice for the remainder of his term in the Upper House.
Mamata Banerjee had offered Luizinho Faleiro a Rajya Sabha ticket to quit Congress and join the TMC. He was also made TMC vice president.
Faleiro took oath as a Rajya Sabha member on November 29, 2021, after he was elected to the Rajya Sabha unopposed in a by-poll.
However, all was not well between Luizinho Faleiro and the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Goemkarponn was first to break the story in September 2022 when the officials from the Party confirmed that Faleiro had been asked to resign from the post of Rajya Sabha MP within six months.
Sources said the party would announce the name as soon as Election Commission announces the schedule.
Faleiro, who was Congress General Secretary in charge of seven north-eastern states before he left the party, was among a host of Congress leaders who had joined Trinamool Congress during that period.
Long being sidelined from the party affairs in Goa, Faleiro was being nudged by the TMC leadership to resign from the Rajya Sabha.
The Mamata Banerjee-led party has been upset with Faleiro after he refused to contest the 2022 Assembly election from Fatorda against Goa Forward Party’s Vijai Sardesai, according to TMC sources.
Meanwhile, TMC, in a press statement, wished Luizinho Faleiro good health, happiness and long life.
“We sincerely hope that he continues to tirelessly serve the people of GOA and strive towards achieving more progress and advancement of the state,” TMC said
AITC also informed that they will announce a new candidate for the seat as and when the election is notified.
