MAPUSA: Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza, along with Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, conducted an inspection of the Mapusa Market to review plans for the refurbishment of the flower market and pottery market.
The Mapusa Friday Market is a major attraction for residents of Mapusa and Bardez, as well as visitors from across Goa and beyond. The proposed improvements aim to preserve the market’s traditional charm while making it more convenient, attractive and welcoming for vendors and visitors.
The refurbishment will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will focus on the flower market, with plans to install a new roof, construct additional structures, improve seating arrangements for flower sellers and upgrade lighting facilities in coordination with the Tourism Department.
The second phase will focus on the pottery market, where a new structure and improved facilities are planned to provide better amenities for pottery sellers.
With online shopping becoming increasingly popular, the proposed upgrades are expected to enhance the appeal of the traditional market as a shopping destination and tourist attraction. The improvements are also aimed at supporting local vendors and preserving the market’s cultural and commercial significance.
Temporary arrangements will be made for vendors during the refurbishment work to minimise disruption to their daily business. The initiative is expected to require coordinated efforts among the authorities, market representatives and other stakeholders to ensure that the work is carried out smoothly while safeguarding local livelihoods.
Mapusa Merchant Association president Shripad Sawant, members of the association, consultants and officials from the Tourism Department were also present during the inspection.
