BETUL: In a shocking turn of events, a massive explosion ripped through a warehouse storing explosives in South Goa, sending shockwaves of fear and destruction through the nearby community.
The blast, linked to a small-calibre ammunition factory, was so powerful that it was visible from a staggering distance of 15 km, illuminating the night sky and causing widespread panic.
Local leaders and officials swiftly responded to the crisis, with the South District Collector vowing to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
A significant blast occurred at a warehouse in Naqueri-Betul, South Goa, around 10:30 pm on Thursday. The explosion triggered a fire that was brought under control within two hours by fire and emergency services.
Miraculously, no injuries were reported despite the blast causing cracks in several nearby houses. The intensity of the explosion was evident as it was visible from Agonda beach, 15 km away.
Local MLA Altone D’Costa visited the site and described the panic among locals due to the deafening sound of the blast.
South District Collector Egna Cleetus will lead the investigation into the cause of the explosion.
Within two hours of arriving on the scene, emergency personnel and firefighters were able to contain the fire. Authorities are looking into what caused the explosion, South Goa district collector Egna Cleetus promised.
Local authorities have expressed doubts about the warehouse’s safety and legality; some claim it did not have the necessary permits. But according to industry representatives, the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO) gave them license.
To ascertain the source of the explosion and evaluate the complete amount of the damage, authorities are undertaking a thorough investigation.
