BELGAUM: Karnataka government has been asked to stop the Progressive River Authority for Water and Harmony (PRAWAH) team from visiting the controversial Kalsa-Bhandura water diversion project sites on July 7.
Kannada organizations in Belagavi and North Karnataka state argue that the PRAWAH team was formed by the Center at the behest of the Goa government.
The associations contend that since the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal (MWDT) has already rendered its decision and the Supreme Court has since issued orders directing the sharing of water in accordance with the tribunal’s ruling, there is no longer any need for this visit and survey.
“PRAWAH’s visit to the Mhadei basin is a violation of the Supreme Court’s ruling and part of a conspiracy orchestrated by Goa.” Following a thorough examination of the water sharing arrangements among Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra, the Apex court has approved the publication of a gazette notification for February 20, 2020. PRAWAH ought not to go to the Mhadei basin, according to prominent Kannada activist Ashok Chandargi.
The PRAWAH team is visiting the location on July 7 at the request of the Government of Goa. Goa plans to use any number of reasons to delay the Kalsa-Bhandura project’s implementation. In this regard, I have strongly written letters to the Chief Secretary, the Dy CM, and the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Chandargi
At PRAWAH’s July 8 meeting in Bengaluru, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Dy CM and Minister of Water Resources D K Shivakumar, along with other relevant officials, should bring up the actual status of the Mhadei water diversion project, Chandargi continued.
“Karnataka authorities should make a concerted effort to secure the necessary clearances for wildlife and the environment, as they are currently awaiting them,” Chandargi stated.
