VASCO: Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar conducted a joint site inspection at the Sada landslide site on Monday, following a significant landslide caused by incessant rains. The inspection, which involved various departments including the Public Works Department (PWD), Gammon India, and Highway authorities, aimed to find a permanent solution to the recurring issue.
Addressing the media post-inspection, Amonkar expressed relief that the landslide, despite bringing down a large number of boulders and rocks, did not result in any injuries or loss of life. He emphasized the urgent need for preventive measures, directing the Mormugao Deputy Collector and other concerned departments to coordinate and implement solutions immediately to prevent further occurrences.
“Safety of the people is our top priority,” Amonkar stated firmly. “I will not tolerate any lackadaisical approach by the departments. Although I am part of the government, I cannot stand by while departments indulge in blame games. I have put a stop to these games and instructed the Mormugao Deputy Collector to issue a disaster management order and commence work within the next few days.”
Amonkar also urged the public to avoid using the road near the landslide site for their safety. Acknowledging the potential inconvenience caused by halting traffic, he directed the PWD to close one lane of the highway and convert the other lane into two-way traffic to ensure smooth movement.
“We are looking for immediate solutions because we cannot afford further delays. The works under disaster management will begin within two days, and the clearing of dangerous rocks from the hillock will start immediately as a preventive step,” Amonkar assured.
