MORMUGAO: Mormugao is set to witness a major tourism and infrastructure push, with several landmark projects in the pipeline, including a proposed Viewing Gallery and a Glass Gallery at the Japanese Garden, MLA Sankalp Amonkar said on Thursday.
Speaking during a tree sapling distribution programme organised in collaboration with the Agriculture Department, Amonkar said the Tourism Department is spearheading a series of initiatives aimed at transforming Mormugao into a more attractive destination for visitors while generating employment opportunities for local residents.
He said the proposed Viewing Gallery project has reached the final stage of the tendering process, while plans for a Glass Gallery at the Japanese Garden are also progressing. According to the MLA, both projects are expected to highlight the region’s natural beauty and add new attractions for tourists and locals.
Amonkar also said beautification and illumination work at the historic Laxmi Narayan Temple is currently underway. The project includes the construction of a stage for cultural and religious events, further enhancing the temple precinct.
To improve public infrastructure, the MLA said several locations across the constituency have been identified for the installation of four-arm streetlights and floodlights. The initiative is aimed at improving safety, enhancing aesthetics, and providing better public spaces for residents and visitors.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure while promoting tourism, heritage conservation, and environmental sustainability, adding that the projects will contribute to Mormugao’s overall development and reinforce its position as an emerging tourism destination.
During the programme, Amonkar distributed tree saplings to the public through the Agriculture Department and urged citizens to actively participate in plantation drives. Stressing the importance of increasing green cover, he said planting and nurturing trees is essential to combat climate change, improve air quality, and create a healthier environment. He appealed to households, schools, colleges, and community organisations to join hands in building a greener and more sustainable Mormugao.
