New Delhi: India and Myanmar have agreed to deepen cooperation on security and border management, with Myanmar assuring New Delhi that its territory will not be used for activities that threaten India’s interests. The assurance came during the 23rd National Level Meeting between the two countries, held in New Delhi on July 7 and 8.
The high level talks focused on strengthening collaboration against terrorism, insurgency, drug trafficking, arms smuggling, human trafficking and other forms of cross border crime. Both sides also reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining peace and stability along the India Myanmar border, a region that remains strategically sensitive.
The Indian delegation was led by Home Secretary Govind Mohan, while Myanmar’s delegation was headed by Min Thu. During the discussions, officials reviewed progress under existing bilateral security mechanisms and explored ways to further improve coordination between the two countries.
A key outcome of the meeting was Myanmar’s assurance that no activities detrimental to India’s security would be permitted from its territory. The commitment is particularly significant in view of ongoing security challenges in India’s northeastern states and developments across the border.
The two sides agreed to strengthen intelligence sharing and enhance coordination between their security agencies to effectively address emerging threats. Discussions also covered measures for capacity building and specialised training to improve the preparedness of law enforcement and security personnel.
Connectivity and infrastructure development also featured prominently during the talks. India and Myanmar reviewed the progress of major regional connectivity projects, including the Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project and the India Myanmar Thailand Trilateral Highway. Both countries stressed the need to accelerate the implementation of these initiatives to improve trade, transport and economic integration with Southeast Asia.
The meeting concluded with both delegations expressing satisfaction over the progress achieved and reaffirming their commitment to sustained engagement, closer security cooperation and stronger bilateral ties in the years ahead.
