PANAJI: Veteran actor Nana Patekar died at the age of 75 after he was found unconscious at his residence in Goa in the early hours of Thursday.
Patekar was rushed to Manipal Hospital after his condition deteriorated. Doctors attempted to revive him for several minutes, but he could not be saved. He was declared dead at around 5:30 am.
According to Dr Shekhar Salkar of Manipal Hospital, Patekar had complained of feeling unwell during the night. A friend subsequently reached his residence after being alerted and found the actor in a serious condition.
The hospital’s emergency team was called to the residence and began resuscitation efforts before shifting Patekar to the hospital. Despite continued attempts to revive him, he was brought dead, the doctor said.
Since the death was treated as a medico-legal case, police formalities were initiated. Patekar’s mortal remains were subsequently shifted to Goa Medical College for a post-mortem examination.
At the time of the incident, Patekar’s friends and caretaker were present, while his family members were not at the residence. His son is understood to have been informed and was travelling to Goa.
Patekar, one of the most recognised names in Indian cinema, had a career spanning theatre, Hindi and Marathi films. Known for his intense performances and distinctive acting style, he won three National Film Awards and was honoured with the Padma Shri for his contribution to the arts.
His death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from across the political, film and cultural spheres.
