New Delhi: Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term, marking the beginning of the BJP-led NDA government’s third straight tenure in the state.
The swearing in ceremony was held at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati, in the presence of Narendra Modi, several Union ministers and chief ministers from NDA ruled states. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma and four cabinet ministers.
The ministers inducted into the new cabinet were BJP leaders Ajanta Neog and Rameswar Teli, along with AGP leader Atul Bora and BPF leader Charan Boro.
The NDA returned to power in Assam after securing a commanding victory in the Assembly elections. The alliance won 102 seats in the 126 member House, with the BJP alone securing 82 seats while its allies AGP and BPF won 10 seats each.
This marks the third consecutive NDA government in Assam since the alliance first came to power in 2016 under the leadership of Sarbananda Sonowal. Sarma has also become the first non Congress leader in Assam to serve as chief minister for two successive terms.
Ahead of the ceremony, Sarma visited the revered Kamakhya Temple and offered prayers for peace, prosperity and development in the state. He later said the new government would work with full dedication towards building a stronger and more developed Assam.
The event witnessed extensive security arrangements across Guwahati, with officials deploying multiple police units, central security forces, SPG and NSG personnel. Large crowds attended the ceremony, which was seen as a major political show of strength for the BJP led alliance in the Northeast.
