New Delhi: India enjoyed a memorable outing in the men’s javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games 2026, with Neeraj Chopra winning the silver medal and debutant Yashvir Singh clinching bronze to complete a historic double podium finish.
Competing in challenging cold and windy conditions, the 28 year old Olympic champion produced a season best throw of 85.83 metres in his second attempt. Although it was enough to secure the silver medal, Chopra was unable to match the outstanding performance of Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who claimed the gold medal with a superb throw of 89.75 metres.
The biggest surprise of the competition came from Yashvir Singh, who delivered a remarkable personal best throw of 85.41 metres on his sixth and final attempt. The 24 year old had been in seventh place before his last throw but produced an outstanding effort to move into the bronze medal position in his first Commonwealth Games appearance.
India’s third representative, Rohit Yadav, finished seventh with a best throw of 81.56 metres.
The event also witnessed an unexpected early exit for Pakistan’s defending Commonwealth Games champion and reigning Olympic gold medallist Arshad Nadeem, who was eliminated after the first three rounds with a best effort of 77.41 metres. Reigning world champion Keshorn Walcott finished sixth with 82.55 metres.
After the competition, Chopra expressed his happiness at sharing the podium with a fellow Indian athlete. He said the achievement reminded him of the Asian Games, where Indian javelin throwers had also celebrated together on the podium.
Chopra praised Yashvir for producing a personal best under pressure and said his own season best throw was an encouraging sign as he continues his comeback from the lower back injury that delayed the start of his 2026 season.
Yashvir described the bronze medal as the biggest achievement of his career, saying he remained confident despite a slow start and decided to give everything in his final attempt, which resulted in his first international medal and a memorable podium finish for India.
