New Delhi: Nitish Kumar has resigned as the Chief Minister of Bihar, bringing to a close a long and influential tenure that spanned nearly two decades. The veteran leader submitted his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain after dissolving his cabinet, marking a major political transition in the state.
Soon after stepping down, Kumar assured that he would continue to support the incoming administration. He expressed confidence that the new government would carry forward development work and emphasised that Bihar would continue progressing under fresh leadership with his guidance.
Kumar’s resignation comes shortly after he assumed office as a member of the Rajya Sabha, signalling a shift from state-level politics to a broader national role. Earlier in the day, he chaired his final cabinet meeting alongside senior leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and other ministers, before formally stepping down.
Reflecting on his tenure, Kumar highlighted the achievements of his government since first taking office in 2005. He pointed to sustained efforts in maintaining law and order, driving development across sectors, and implementing initiatives aimed at benefiting women, youth, and various communities. He also noted the continued support from the central government in accelerating Bihar’s growth.
With Kumar’s exit, the Bharatiya Janata Party is set to form the next government in the state. Samrat Choudhary, who previously served as Deputy Chief Minister, has emerged as the frontrunner to take over the top post and is expected to be sworn in soon.
This transition marks the end of an era in Bihar politics, as Kumar steps aside after years of leadership that shaped the state’s governance landscape. Attention now shifts to the incoming administration and its plans to build on the foundation laid over the years while steering Bihar toward further development.
