New Delhi: The Amarnath Yatra 2026 commenced on Friday with the first batch of pilgrims beginning their journey to the holy cave shrine from both the Baltal and Nunwan base camps in Jammu and Kashmir.
The pilgrimage officially started with the first group of devotees departing from the Baltal Domail base camp in Ganderbal under the supervision of senior civil, police and security officials. Authorities confirmed that extensive arrangements have been made along both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes, including medical facilities, security deployment, RFID verification systems and logistical support to ensure a smooth and safe pilgrimage.
As the annual yatra began, the administration issued a fresh advisory directing devotees not to travel to Jammu and Kashmir without completing advance registration. Officials stated that the daily number of pilgrims allowed on the route has been fixed in accordance with safety guidelines and court directives, making strict adherence to registration limits essential.
Authorities noted that advance registration facilities had been available for several weeks through designated bank branches and online platforms across the country. However, despite repeated advisories, a large number of pilgrims continue to arrive without registration, placing pressure on the limited Tatkal registration system.
The administration clarified that pilgrims arriving without registration would have to wait for available slots and would only be allowed to undertake the yatra on dates assigned by authorities. Registered devotees were also instructed not to report before their scheduled travel dates, as early arrivals would not be permitted to proceed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings to devotees and wished them a safe and successful pilgrimage. He also appealed to pilgrims to embrace five key resolutions centred on cleanliness, safety, environmental protection, support for local communities and nation building.
The 57 day pilgrimage will continue under heightened security arrangements and is scheduled to conclude on August 28.
