PANAJI: Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar today said that no fresh case of cholera has been reported either from the Cutbona fishing jetty or the fish landing centre at Mobor-Cavelossim during the last 24 hours.
“Cholera & Diarrhea cases at Cutbona jetty under control; cases nil as of now; health cards of workers to be compulsory,” said Halarnkar
He further said that his department will grant 5-6 month relaxation to owners to install toilet on vessels.
Six patients are under treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, according to state epidemiologist Dr. Utkarsh Betodkar. He reported that on Tuesday, the lone patient confined to the South Goa district hospital was released.
During a review meeting of the situation at the South Goa Collectorate on Tuesday, Dr. Utkarsh informed Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira that the total number of cholera cases reported from the Cutbona fishing jetty and at the Mobor fish landing center is around 187.
Out of the total 187 cases, 151 instances were recorded from Cutbona alone. The remaining cholera cases were from the Mobor.
According to Dr. Utkarsh, the majority of cholera patients have healed and been allowed to leave the facilities. He did, however, issue a warning, saying that what had transpired when the workers were first taken to the hospitals at the final stage should not take place again.
According to him, the decision to remove the outdated and abandoned boats from the Cutbona fishing jetty will significantly aid in the fight against dengue as well as aid in the containment of cholera. “Once the bacteria are eliminated, cholera will eventually be confined. However, he noted that these abandoned ships provide a haven for diseases carried by vectors.
