New Delhi: Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday appealed to Opposition parties to participate in a discussion on the alleged NEET paper leak issue without imposing any preconditions, saying the matter concerns the future of students and should not become a political confrontation.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Rijiju said the government was prepared to begin the debate immediately and questioned why any conditions were being attached before discussions could take place. He urged all parties to allow Parliament to function smoothly and engage in a meaningful debate.
He maintained that placing conditions before the discussion reflected the Opposition’s approach rather than a genuine intent to address the issue. Rijiju stressed that Parliament should deliberate on the matter without political differences and reiterated that the discussion could begin the same day.
The minister also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assurance of strict action against those involved in examination paper leaks. He said the Prime Minister had announced the establishment of fast track courts to ensure speedy trials and stringent punishment for those responsible for compromising students’ futures.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi had said that protecting the interests and future of the country’s youth remained the government’s top priority and assured that those found guilty in paper leak cases would face severe consequences.
Rijiju’s remarks came a day after the government reiterated in the Lok Sabha that it was ready to hold a discussion on the NEET controversy. He had then stated that consultations among floor leaders were required to finalise the parliamentary rule under which the debate would be conducted, along with its timing and duration.
The Opposition has continued to demand a discussion on the alleged paper leak while also insisting on the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the handling of the issue. The standoff has led to repeated disruptions in both Houses of Parliament over the past several days.
Calling for cooperation, Rijiju once again urged Opposition parties to set aside political differences and participate in a debate without any preconditions, saying the issue deserved a serious and constructive discussion.
