PANAJI: In a move aimed at tightening enforcement against illegal waste disposal, North Goa District Magistrate Ankit Yadav has directed authorities to intensify inspections of illegal dumping sites and bulk waste generators while ensuring strict implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
Chairing a meeting of the Special Cell on Solid Waste Management, constituted under the directions of the Supreme Court, the District Magistrate reviewed the district’s preparedness to curb illegal dumping, improve monitoring and strengthen compliance with waste management norms.
The meeting, attended by representatives of village panchayats, municipalities, the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) and the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), assessed the identification and registration of Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs), the handling of complaints related to illegal dumping and littering, inspection schedules prepared by Taluka Level Special Cells, and the submission of fortnightly monitoring reports.
The progress of capacity-building programmes for officials of Urban Local Bodies and Village Panchayats was also reviewed to improve enforcement of the Solid Waste Management Rules.
The District Magistrate directed all departments, Urban Local Bodies, Village Panchayats and Taluka Level Special Cells to strengthen inter-departmental coordination, carry out regular inspections of illegal dumping hotspots and Bulk Waste Generators, submit reports on time and strictly enforce the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directions.
The directions are aimed at ensuring scientific waste management, curbing illegal dumping and improving environmental cleanliness across North Goa.
