PANAJI: The most recent victim of cybercrime is a sitting MLA from North Goa, who ultimately pays the offender.
A guy from Odisha was arrested by the Goa police’s Crime Branch on Wednesday for allegedly extorting Rs 55,000 from the senior lawmaker by using a manipulated film that had graphic sexual content as a form of blackmail. Kukesh Rauta, a citizen of Ganjam, Odisha, has been identified as the culprit.
The MLA, whose name has been concealed, said in a complaint filed on December 2 that the accused called him on his cell phone over a video conversation. The accused secretly filmed the MLA throughout the call, and the tape was subsequently edited digitally to include graphic sexual material about a woman.
The MLA claimed that after sending him the edited footage, the accused threatened to make the video public unless he paid. The MLA first sent Rs 55,000 to the accused’s bank account under duress. The accused, however, later wanted an extra Rs 5 crore and threatened to have the footage posted on social media if they didn’t agree.
