New Delhi: Raghav Chadha has publicly defended his decision to leave the Aam Aadmi Party and join the Bharatiya Janata Party, addressing criticism over his sudden political shift. In a video statement, the Rajya Sabha MP explained that his move was driven by concerns over the party’s internal functioning and direction.
Chadha, who was among seven leaders to exit the AAP and align with the BJP, stated that his decision was not made lightly. Emphasising his long association with the party, he recalled contributing to its growth over the years. However, he claimed that the organisation had changed significantly, describing the current environment as restrictive and unproductive.
He pointed to what he called a “toxic work atmosphere,” alleging that he was increasingly prevented from performing his duties, including limited opportunities to speak in Parliament. According to him, this situation made it difficult to contribute meaningfully, prompting him to reconsider his position within the party.
Responding to allegations of betrayal, Chadha said his entry into politics was not motivated by personal ambition. He highlighted that he had left behind a successful professional career to pursue public service and insisted that his recent move was guided by principles rather than personal gain.
Explaining the collective exit, he argued that the decision carried greater weight because it involved multiple leaders. He maintained that while an individual judgment could be questioned, the same could not easily be said for a group acting together, reinforcing his belief in the legitimacy of their choice.
Chadha also criticised the current leadership within the AAP, alleging that the party’s focus had shifted away from public interest. His remarks come amid growing political tensions, particularly with upcoming elections in Punjab, where the development is expected to have significant implications.
The move has sparked a wider debate over the future of the AAP and its standing in national politics following recent electoral setbacks.
