New Delhi:
In the wake of India’s disappointing Test series loss to Australia, Shubman Gill, the team’s ODI vice-captain, has come forward to defend the team’s performance and highlight its illustrious past. Gill’s remarks come at a crucial time, as India prepares to face England in a three-match ODI series starting Thursday, which will serve as a precursor to the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Gill emphasized that a single series defeat does not define the team’s overall form, pointing to India’s consistent performances in various tournaments. “One series does not determine the form of the whole team. There are many players who have performed consistently in numerous series and tournaments,” Gill stated during a press conference in Nagpur.
The recent Test series against Australia, which India lost 1-3, has drawn significant criticism, particularly aimed at top batters like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Gill himself. However, Gill argued that the absence of key player Jasprit Bumrah due to back spasms on the final day of the fourth Test could have altered the series outcome. “We were unfortunate not to have Bumrah on the last day. Had he been there, we could have won the match and drawn the series,” he explained.
Gill also drew attention to India’s past achievements, including back-to-back Test series wins in Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21, as well as their appearance in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. “One match and one day don’t define us. We have won in Australia twice before and reached the final of a World Cup. These achievements should be kept in mind,” he added.
India’s recent Test series whitewash at home against New Zealand has further intensified the scrutiny. However, Gill remains optimistic about the team’s capabilities, especially with key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and himself returning for the ODI series against England.
The upcoming ODI series against England will be pivotal for India as they fine-tune their combinations ahead of the Champions Trophy. Rohit Sharma will lead the team, with Gill serving as his deputy. India is grouped with Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh in Group B and will kickstart their Champions Trophy campaign on February 20 against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium.
