Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has described Adani Power’s upcoming 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project in Dhubri district as a major step towards strengthening the state’s electricity infrastructure and attracting large-scale investment.
Sarma laid the foundation stone for the project on Saturday in the presence of Jeet Adani, Director of the Adani Group. With an estimated investment of ₹48,000 crore, the project is being positioned as the largest private investment in Assam.
Speaking about the development, Sarma said the power plant would be the biggest in Assam and across the Northeast. He also stated that the project could help Assam transition from a power-deficit state to a power-surplus state.
The Chief Minister highlighted the potential impact on electricity costs, saying the state’s average power cost could decline by approximately ₹1 after the plant becomes operational.
Beyond electricity generation, Sarma emphasised the wider economic importance of the investment and indicated that Assam could work with the Adani Group on additional projects in the future.
The state government is also pursuing a broader energy strategy that combines thermal power with renewable sources, including hydropower and pumped storage projects. Sarma said Assam’s geographical conditions offer opportunities for developing pumped storage infrastructure, with private investors showing interest in the sector.
According to the Chief Minister, thermal power is being developed to support cost stability, while green energy projects are intended to meet future electricity requirements.
The government’s long-term objective is to ensure sufficient and reliable power for industries and businesses planning to invest in Assam. Sarma said the state aims to build an energy system capable of supporting expanding industrial activity across the region.
He further indicated that Assam could become an important investment destination for the Adani Group in the coming years, as the state continues to expand its energy and industrial infrastructure.
