KHARIWADDO: A portion of the extended Khariwaddo fishing jetty partially collapsed following heavy rainfall and a rise in the water level, renewing long-standing demands from the fishing community for a larger and safer jetty. No injuries were reported in the incident.
The collapse has once again highlighted concerns over the ageing infrastructure, with fishermen stating that the existing jetty is too small to accommodate the nearly 250 fishing boats operating from Khariwaddo. Due to inadequate berthing space, several boats are forced to anchor outside the jetty, exposing them to rough sea conditions and increasing the risk of damage, especially during the monsoon.
Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association President Jose Philip D’Souza said the latest incident underlines the urgent need for government intervention.
“The Khariwaddo fishing jetty has been inadequate for many years. Around 250 fishing boats operate from this area, but the available space is far too small to accommodate them safely. Every monsoon, several boats remain outside the jetty, where they are vulnerable to rough seas and damage. The recent collapse should serve as a wake-up call for the authorities,” he said.
D’Souza urged the government to immediately repair the damaged section while also sanctioning a comprehensive expansion project.
The fishing community has appealed to the government to treat the matter as a priority, warning that further delays could threaten fishermen’s livelihoods and put boats at greater risk during adverse weather.
