Noida: A large-scale protest by factory workers over wage concerns spiralled into violence across Noida, leading to widespread disruption, property damage and over 300 arrests. What began as a demonstration demanding better pay quickly escalated into clashes between protesters and security personnel in areas including Phase-2 and Sector 63.
Thousands of workers gathered across nearly 80 locations, blocking roads and bringing traffic to a standstill. Tensions rose sharply when groups within the crowd resorted to stone-pelting and set vehicles and property on fire, prompting police intervention. Authorities later confirmed that the situation was brought under control, with heavy security deployed in sensitive zones.
Police officials stated that while the protest initially remained peaceful, certain elements from outside the district allegedly attempted to incite violence after workers had begun dispersing. Several individuals suspected of triggering unrest have been taken into custody, and further identification is underway using CCTV footage from industrial units.
The unrest is also being examined for possible external links. Authorities indicated that recent security developments in nearby regions have led to a broader investigation into whether the violence was part of a larger attempt to disrupt law and order. The incident has been described by officials as a potential conspiracy aimed at destabilising the region.
The protests were triggered after workers raised concerns over wage disparities. Following a significant hike in minimum wages in neighbouring Haryana, workers in Noida questioned why similar revisions were not being implemented locally. Many claimed they were being underpaid despite long working hours, with some alleging irregular wage practices and inadequate compensation for overtime.
Officials maintained that revised wage structures had already been introduced earlier this month, outlining updated pay scales for different categories of workers. However, dissatisfaction among labourers over implementation and working conditions led to the mass mobilisation.
Political reactions followed swiftly, with appeals for calm and calls for dialogue. Authorities have assured strict enforcement of labour laws and reiterated their commitment to safeguarding both workers’ rights and industrial stability as investigations continue.
