PONDA: The Ponda municipality demolished the illegal traders’ stalls erected on private property at Upper Bazaar Shantinagar Ponda.
According to Gharu Sawant, President of Amchi Vyapari Sangatana, the stalls were constructed since Covid 19 Pandemic on private property and were eating vendors’ business in Ponda Market Shed.
He welcomed the decision of PMC.
“These commercial stalls were set up along the roadside, including vegetable, spice, fish, and fruit sellers. Eight people were doing business by putting plastic covers on the side of the road,” he said.
The issue was raised by complainant Amchi Vyapari Sangatana (Vendors Association at Ponda Market), as the municipal market vendors suffered losses due to the illegal stalls outside the market.
On May 10, ‘Amchi Vyapari Sangathan gave a memorandum regarding this to the Ponda Municipality. Accordingly, Ponda Municipality inspected this area on May 27. At that time, the representatives of the trade association were also taken into confidence by the municipality and assured to take action.
However, the issue of encroachment had been pending for many days, but today (Friday) afternoon, the Ponda Municipality removed these eight commercial blocks in a special operation.
Seeing the action being taken, these traders helped remove the stalls, so the area is now clean.
