MAPUSA: A police constable attached to the Mapusa police station has been convicted by a Mapusa court in a case involving the sexual assault of a woman in police custody. The incident dates back to August 13, 2011.
According to the prosecution, the woman had been rescued from the Mapusa area and brought to the police station when the constable, while on duty, allegedly verbally abused her using obscene language, made derogatory remarks, physically assaulted her, and inappropriately touched her, thereby outraging her modesty. The constable then forced her to engage in oral sex and threatened her with serious consequences if she spoke out.
The survivor was reportedly told that her version would not be believed because she was “wrong” and he was “right,” leveraging his authority as a police officer.
The investigation into the case was conducted by then Crime Branch Police Inspector Sunita Sawant, who currently serves as Superintendent of Police, Anti-Narcotics Cell. A chargesheet was filed following her inquiry, and the accused constable pleaded not guilty during the trial.
After years of legal proceedings, the court has now found the constable guilty. Details regarding the sentencing are expected to follow.
The conviction underscores the importance of accountability within law enforcement and sends a strong message against abuse of power by those in uniform.
