PANAJI: The Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) today said that elections to Sankhali and Ponda Municipal Council Chairperson and Vice Chairperson will be held on May 16.

Candidates backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday clinched majority seats in the polls to the Ponda and the Sankhali municipal councils in the state, the results of which were declared by the state election commission.
The elections to the two civic bodies were held on Friday.
The panel supported by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant won 11 out of the 12 seats in the Sankhali Municipal Council, while one candidate owing affiliation to the Congress was elected unopposed. Sawant is the MLA from Sankhali in North Goa district.
In the Ponda Municipal Council, the candidates supported by BJP won ten out of the 15 seats, while five other candidates clinched the remaining seats in the temple town.
On the polling day, the State Election Commission (SEC) declared that the SMC had registered a record 87.56 per cent polling while 74.66 per cent polling was recorded in Ponda.
The SMC chief’s post is reserved for women candidates while the Ponda municipality chairperson’s post is open for all councillors.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant while reacting to the victory of his party-backed candidates, said, “Discussions will be held with the party leaders after the Karnataka elections and a suitable councillor will be chosen for the SMC chairperson’s post.”
