New Delhi: The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in India has expressed gratitude to the Government of India, its official delegation, political leaders and citizens for participating in the funeral ceremonies of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. The embassy described India’s presence as a powerful expression of mutual respect and a reflection of the longstanding relationship between the two nations.
In a statement, the Iranian mission thanked the official Indian delegation for representing the country at the funeral ceremonies in Tehran and paying tribute to Khamenei. It also acknowledged the participation of political leaders, Members of Parliament, scholars, intellectuals and representatives from different faiths, saying their presence highlighted the deep historical, cultural and people to people ties shared by India and Iran.
The embassy said the gesture demonstrated sincere solidarity with the Iranian people during a period of national mourning and added that Iran would always remember India’s support and compassion. It expressed confidence that the goodwill shown during the ceremonies would further strengthen the longstanding friendship between the two countries. The mission also thanked Indian officials and citizens who conveyed condolences following Khamenei’s death.
India was represented at the funeral by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain. Senior Congress leader and former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, along with Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti, also attended the ceremonies in Tehran.
The funeral marked the conclusion of a two day public farewell attended by millions of mourners. Iranian political and military leaders paid tribute to Khamenei and pledged to continue his legacy while vowing accountability for those responsible for his death. His three sons were present during the ceremonies, while Mojtaba Khamenei, who has since been appointed as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, did not attend the funeral.
