MUMBAI:
Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma believes that resuming the bilateral series between India and Pakistan will be a huge boost to Test cricket. India and Pakistan have not played each other in a bilateral series for around a decade due to political tensions and as a result, their matches in international competitions are one of the much-anticipated contests for all cricket fans. During an episode of the “Club Prairie Fire” podcast, former England captain Michael Vaughan asked Rohit – “Don’t you think India playing Pakistan regularly will be fantastic for Test cricket?”
Rohit had a clear reply – “I totally believe that they are a good team, superb bowling line-up, good contest, if we play overseas. The last Test was played way back in 2007-08.”
“Yeah, I would love to (play against Pakistan), it would be a great contest between two sides. We play them in ICC trophies, pure cricket I am looking at, great contest, so why not?” he added.
Meanwhile, Rohit completely rubbished rumours of a meeting with head coach Rahul Dravid and chief selector Ajit Agarkar regarding India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. Media reports suggested that a meeting took place in Mumbai where the main topics that were discussed concerned Hardik Pandya’s bowling and whether the team management should consider Virat Kohli as an opening batter.
“I haven’t met anyone. Ajit Agarkar is somewhere in Dubai playing golf and Rahul Dravid is actually watching his kids play in Bengaluru. He [Dravid] was in Mumbai but he got him [the son] to play on a red-soil wicket at CCI. That’s about it,” Rohit revealed.
“We haven’t met, to be honest. I think in today’s day and age, unless you hear it from either myself or Rahul himself or Ajit himself or someone from BCCI coming and talking in front of the camera, everything is fake,” he added.
While there has been no official communication from the BCCI, the selectors are expected to announce the squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 in the first week of May.
