PANAJI: Defending champions Rosary College of Commerce and Arts, Navelim, defeated St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, by a score of 1-0 to win the Inter-collegiate Football Championship for Women 2023–24, organized by Goa University at University Ground, Taleigao Plateau.
Winning this year also Rosary College registered a hat trick of wins at Goa University’s Inter-Collegiate Football Women Championships, they have been champions for years 2019-20, 2022-23, and 2023-24.
Rosary College started with attacking intent and dominated play in the first half, having more ball position. The first goal was scored in the 7th minute of the match which was scored by Rhea Pires.
In the second half, Rosary College, with a strong attacking approach and sensible play, had chances to score but most of the shots were off-target. Also, St Xaviers College showed some offensive play but was kept at bay by the strong defense of Rosary College to crown themselves the champions of intercollegiate women’s football.
The best player of the championship was awarded to Rhea Pires of Rosary College of Commerce and Arts, Navelim.
The chief guest, Dr. Caitano Fernandes, President, Goa Football Association, and guest of honour, Mr. Milton Fernanders, Former Asst. Director of Physical Education and Sports, Goa University, Mr. Collin Vaz, former Member of Goa Football Development Council, Dr. Francis Lobo, College Director of Physical Education and Sports, Rosary College along with Mr. Balachandra B. Jadar, Asst. Director of Physical Education and Sports, Goa University, graced the valedictory function and presented medals and trophies to the finalist.
