PANAJI: The state government will levy a fine of Rs 10 lakh on those found polluting or contaminating groundwater.
An amendment to the Goa Ground Water Regulation Act that was moved by the Water Resources Department and passed in the legislative assembly has been notified by the government.
“Every Bulk user of water shall treat sewage, before its release, by adopting the standards as specified by the Goa State Pollution Control Board, failing which, he shall be charged a penalty of Rs. 10/- per cubic meter of water supplied to him or part thereof,” states the notification amending the Goa Irrigation Act.
In accordance with the notification, unlawful wells must be filled in and sealed permanently, and the person who dug or used the well will be reimbursed for any associated costs.
It further specifies that there will be a fine of Rs 10 lakh for impeding the groundwater officer or any other anyone authorized to exercise the functions under this Act.
Additionally, the Act has been revised to impose fines of up to Rs 10 lakh on those who engage in groundwater transportation or illegal borewell sinking in violation of any of the terms and conditions.
