New Delhi: Samrat Choudhary has been officially named the new Chief Minister of Bihar, becoming the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party to hold the state’s top position. His swearing in ceremony is expected to take place soon, with Narendra Modi likely to be in attendance.
The decision was finalised after Choudhary was unanimously elected as the BJP legislature party leader, marking a significant political shift in a state where the party had long remained a junior partner. With this development, the BJP now leads governments across most major Hindi heartland states, adding Bihar to its list.
Outgoing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stepped down earlier in the day, expressing confidence in the incoming administration and pledging his full support. In a symbolic gesture following the announcement, Kumar congratulated Choudhary and encouraged party members to welcome the new leader with applause.
Choudhary, 57, previously served as Deputy Chief Minister and has had a dynamic political journey spanning several decades. Beginning his career in the early 1990s, he moved across major political parties before joining the BJP in 2017, where he quickly emerged as a prominent voice. Known for his strong political positioning, he later aligned closely with Kumar after the BJP and JD(U) renewed their alliance.
Belonging to the Koeri or Kushwaha community, an influential Other Backward Class group in Bihar, Choudhary’s elevation is seen as strategically significant. The community holds considerable electoral influence, making his leadership crucial in shaping the state’s political landscape.
The transition also reflects a broader evolution in Bihar politics. Despite being a key alliance partner for years, the BJP had not previously held the मुख्यमंत्री’s office in the state. With near parity in legislative strength between the BJP and JD(U), the leadership shift signals a new phase in governance.
As Bihar prepares for this change, attention now turns to the new administration’s priorities and how it will navigate governance under fresh leadership.
