PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday hailed the Women’s Reservation Bill as a historic reform, stating that it will significantly enhance women’s participation in India’s democratic institutions.
The legislation provides for 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies, and is being seen as a major step towards strengthening gender equality in political decision-making.
Sawant said the move would empower women by creating greater opportunities for leadership and active involvement in governance. He also lauded Narendra Modi for spearheading the initiative, calling it a reflection of the government’s commitment to inclusive development and social justice.
The Chief Minister noted that the reform aligns with the vision of Dr B. R. Ambedkar, emphasising equality, justice, and empowerment. He said the Bill carries forward these constitutional ideals by ensuring women receive adequate representation in governance.
Highlighting its broader impact, Sawant said increased participation of women in leadership roles would strengthen governance and contribute to balanced decision-making across sectors such as education, health, economy, and public welfare.
He also congratulated women across Goa and the country, stating that the Bill opens new avenues for leadership and progress. Reaffirming his support, Sawant said the reform marks a decisive step towards building a more equal and progressive society.
