DHAVLIM: Smoke has suddenly started to erupt from Dhavlim scrapyard five days after being extinguished. The owners have lost Rs 5 crore in damages.
Following this Locals strongly opposed to scrapyards in residential area, the locals residing in surrounding area complained that they fell ill for two days due to breathing of chemical smoke relased due to burning of chemical , metal and other mix scrap.
Now there is Growing demand from locals to shift them in Industries. Besides four families lost home after their rented room destroyed in fire.
Environmentalist Sandeep Parkar said to avoid major loss of human life and property scrapyards should be shifted in Industrial zone.
Commuters says as fire and black cloud of smoke was on highway the authorities forced to close the Dhavlim-Farmagudi Highway two days and though traffic diverted the traffic on Ponda-Margao from Bethora Bypass road for almost two days causing tremendous hardship to commuters.
According to Kavlem locals the issue of illegal scrapyards dominates in every gramsabhas demanding to clear illegal scrapyards with some two more are also located by the side of NH. They are not paying taxes to Panchayat but the landowners giving them rent for business earns to the tune of lakhs every year.
According to Kavlem locals this is the second such major fire incident by side of NH.Earlier last year one Godown jampacked with goods was gutted in massive fire causing loss to the tune of Rs 1 Crore.
