PANAJI: Accused Kukesh Rauta who is in judicial custody today has withdrawn bail application filed before Panaji JMFC Court.
Kukesh was arrested by Crime Branch for allegedly extorting sitting MLA of Goa by threatening to make MLA’s alleged morphed obscene video public.
The 34-year-old accused, Kukesh Rauta, was located during an investigation after the victim MLA made a complaint on December 2.
In addition to using the MLA’s name for offensive purposes, the accused, who the MLA knew, allegedly sought Rs 55,000 out of Rs 55,000 and promised not to post the footage on social media.
According to CB SP Rahul Gupta, Rauta made contact with the complainant over a video chat, surreptitiously captured his video, and altered the tape to produce sexually explicit content that revealed the identity of the MLA.
The accused then threatened to post the altered footage on social media unless Rs 5 crore was paid after sending it to the MLA’s cell phone.
According to the CB, Rauta confessed to extorting Rs 5 crore after being arrested two days after the incident became public knowledge.
He is being investigated for the offense under Sections 66-C (identity theft), 67 (transmitting obscene content), and 67-A (publishing obscene material) of the IT Act, 2008, as well as Section 384 (extortion) of the Indian Penal Code. He is currently in police custody.
