ARAMBOL: Amar Bandekar, 37, of Arambol, was allegedly murdered on Sunday night while strolling along the beach after a minor altercation with some shacks workers.
The incident happened at 6:30 p.m., according to the Mandrem Police, when Amar was out for his usual evening stroll and attempted to move some chairs that a shack operator had placed on the beach aside because he was obstructing traffic. This resulted in Bandekar and a shack worker arguing verbally.
Other workers joined in the fistfight that quickly broke out from the disagreements. Bandekar collapsed to the ground, unconscious, during the battle. Soon after, he was taken to Tuem, Pernem’s Primary Health Centre, where the attending physicians pronounced him dead.
Upon learning about the situation, the Mandrem Police hurried to the medical facility. Later, they arrived at the scene of the incident, detained five more people they suspected of being involved in the brawl, and arrested one shack worker right away.
The townspeople and Amar’s relatives, meantime, promised to refuse to take his remains unless his murderers were apprehended. Many residents hurried to the beach and called attention to the shack operator’s illegal actions, pointing out that he had set up deckbeds, chairs, beach umbrellas, and other items directly on the beach, preventing visitors from accessing it. They also demanded that the beach shack license be revoked.
When North SP Akshat Kaushal visited the Mandrem Police Station, he informed the media that one person had been arrested in this regard and that further people would be detained if they were discovered to have been involved in the horrific crime.
