MARGAO: A high-level meeting to assess measures for managing and controlling the stray dog population was convened under the chairmanship of Additional Collector–II, South Goa, Ramesh Gaonkar, at the Kushavati district headquarters, in line with directions issued by the Supreme Court in a suo motu matter.
The review was held in the presence of the Deputy Collector, South Goa–II, and brought together senior officials including the Additional Director of the Directorate of Higher Education, Sub-Divisional Magistrates, Mamlatdars, Block Development Officers, and representatives from key departments such as Transport, Kadamba Transport Corporation, Urban Development, and airport authorities.
During the meeting, officials evaluated taluka-wise progress on fencing public premises such as schools, hospitals, bus stands, and railway stations. Authorities were instructed to fast-track pending work and submit compliance updates at the earliest.
Local bodies were tasked with mapping areas with a high incidence of stray dogs, conducting field inspections, and strengthening waste management practices to curb the issue. These findings are to be reported to the respective Deputy Collectors and Sub-Divisional Magistrates.
Municipal councils and village panchayats were also asked to earmark appropriate sites for designated feeding zones and shelters for stray dogs.
Additionally, Deputy Collectors and SDMs have been directed to hold coordination meetings with relevant departments and ensure submission of a detailed compliance report ahead of the next district-level review.
