New Delhi: Maharashtra continues to face an intense monsoon spell, with relentless rainfall causing widespread disruption across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune, Nashik and the Konkan region. Torrential rain over the past several days has resulted in severe waterlogging, landslides, transport disruptions and multiple rain related accidents, prompting authorities to maintain a high level of alert.
At least 13 people lost their lives and 10 others were injured in rain related incidents reported across the state in a single day. Several fatalities were linked to wall collapses and falling trees, while a tragic building collapse in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area claimed six lives after part of a three storey chawl gave way during evacuation efforts. Nearly 100 houses have also suffered damage, with hundreds of residents shifted to safer locations as flood like conditions worsened.
The India Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for Mumbai, Kolhapur, Satara, Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated places. Authorities have also cautioned residents in the Nashik and Trimbakeshwar region following a cloudburst warning. As a precaution, work from home arrangements have been announced for offices, while disaster response teams remain deployed across vulnerable areas.
Mumbai has recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall, with the city and its suburbs receiving between 300 mm and 380 mm over the past 48 hours. Schools and colleges across the city remained closed, while civic authorities intensified emergency operations to respond to flooding, tree falls and structural damage. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from beaches, waterlogged roads and dilapidated structures.
Elsewhere, Pune district has witnessed extensive damage after continuous rainfall triggered 22 landslides and forced the closure of several roads. Lonavala recorded nearly 900 mm of rain, marking its highest rainfall in 16 years. Despite the destruction, the heavy showers have significantly boosted water storage in Mumbai’s reservoirs, with water levels rising sharply over the past 24 hours, offering relief for the city’s long term water supply.
