New Delhi:
In a poignant display of cultural and spiritual appreciation, Laurene Powell Jobs, the widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, has embarked on a significant spiritual journey at the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Her visit, which began on Saturday night, is marked by her deep respect for Indian traditions and her commitment to spiritual growth.
Laurene Powell Jobs, now affectionately known as ‘Kamala’ after being bestowed this Hindu name by Swami Kailashanand Giri Maharaj of the Niranjani Akhara, will be staying at the Niranjini Akhara camp until January 15. Accompanied by a 40-member team, she was warmly welcomed with a grand trumpet fanfare and served traditional hot masala tea in a kulhad.
Before her arrival at the Maha Kumbh, ‘Kamala’ visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, where she offered prayers from outside the main temple area, adhering to the temple’s tradition that only Hindus can touch the Shivling. Swami Kailashanand Giri Maharaj, who accompanied her, highlighted her profound respect for Indian spirituality and traditions. “She is very religious and spiritual,” he said. “She wants to learn about our traditions and respects me as a father and a Guru.”
During her stay, ‘Kamala’ plans to participate in the ceremonial Amrit Snan (auspicious bath) scheduled for January 14, marking Makar Sankranti. The Niranjini Akhara, along with other akharas, will take their ordained dips in a sequence, with the Niranjini Akhara slated to bathe between 7:05 am and 7:45 am. Additionally, she will observe the ancient Hindu tradition of Kalpvas, a month-long spiritual discipline involving living by the banks of the Sangam, meditating, and seeking purification and spiritual growth.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, held at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers, has seen a massive influx of devotees, with nearly 50 lakh pilgrims taking a holy dip ahead of Paush Purnima. ‘Kamala’s’ participation in these rituals underscores her deep connection with Indian spirituality and her willingness to immerse herself in its rich traditions.
