New Delhi: Iran has declared that the Strait of Hormuz will remain fully open for commercial shipping during the ongoing ceasefire period. The announcement was made by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who stated that all vessels can safely pass through the crucial maritime corridor along designated routes coordinated by Iranian authorities.
The development comes in the backdrop of a temporary ceasefire linked to the conflict involving Israel and Lebanon. The reopening of the strait, one of the world’s most vital oil transit routes, is expected to ease global supply concerns and stabilise shipping movements in the region.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump also confirmed that the waterway is operational and accessible. However, he indicated that the United States would continue its naval presence in the region until broader agreements with Iran are finalised. He further claimed that assurances had been given that the strait would not be used as a strategic pressure point in the future.
The announcement has already had a noticeable economic impact, with global crude oil prices dropping by around 10 percent following the reopening. The Strait of Hormuz plays a critical role in global energy supply, handling a significant portion of the world’s oil shipments.
The ceasefire itself is part of broader diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the region. The United States has been actively engaging with leaders from both Israel and Lebanon to sustain the truce and explore possibilities for longer term peace. Discussions are also underway for potential high level meetings between regional leaders in the coming days.
European leaders, including Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer, have welcomed the reopening but stressed the need for it to become a permanent arrangement. They have also indicated plans to support international initiatives aimed at ensuring maritime security and protecting commercial shipping in the region.
