PANAJI: Director General of Police Jaspal Singh has justified strict check at Old Goa for Novenas and the feast saying it is for the safety of pilgrims.
Replying to a critical social media post on not allowing baggage, DGP said that it is an advisory to be voluntarily followed not an imposition.
“People are carrying their bags and other essential items. You may check this with the church rector. No one has complained,” DGP said in his reply.
He said the district police had done this to rule out the possibility of someone carrying an improvised explosive device like it was carried in a religious gathering of Jehova’s Witnesses. Inefficiency angle in this is beyond my understanding, he said.
