PANAJI: In the wake of the collapse of a recently built false ceiling and leaks in Kala Academy’s (KA) auditorium, concerns have been raised about the calibre of repairs carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD).
A senior PWD official said that the abrupt thunderstorm flooded the Academy’s grounds, and he ascribed Monday’s disaster to unanticipated, unseasonal rain.
Furthermore, the representative said that the PWD has corresponded with the Art and Culture Division, imploring them to take ownership of the Kala Academy structure.
Speaking under anonymity, the official said that the water buildup on the terrace was caused by a lot of tree leaves obstructing the outlets, which allowed water to enter the ducts and eventually cause leaks within the building.
“Water seeping through the roof, three days after the rain, is thought to be the cause of the historic Kala Academy building’s false ceiling portion collapsing,” sources said
“We now know that there were signs of water leaking, which might have contributed to the deterioration and eventual collapse of the false ceiling,”
Kala Academy had experienced a similar event in July 2023 when an open auditorium slab collapsed.
