New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party is preparing to form its first government in West Bengal, with Suvendu Adhikari emerging as the leading contender for the chief minister’s post. A crucial meeting of the party’s legislative wing is scheduled in Kolkata on May 8, where he is expected to be formally chosen as leader.
The meeting will bring together the party’s newly elected legislators following its decisive victory in the recent Assembly elections. With a large number of winning candidates, arrangements are being made to accommodate the gathering. During the session, senior leaders are likely to propose and endorse Adhikari’s name, paving the way for him to stake claim to form the government.
After the selection process, Adhikari is expected to meet the Governor to formally initiate government formation. The swearing in ceremony is likely to take place the following day, coinciding with Rabindra Jayanti, adding symbolic significance to the occasion. Several top leaders, including Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, are expected to attend the event.
Adhikari has emerged as a central figure in the party’s success, having delivered a strong electoral performance. Known for his grassroots connect and administrative experience, he has played a key role in expanding the party’s influence in the state.
His political journey includes a significant shift from the All India Trinamool Congress, where he previously held key positions, to the BJP in 2020. Over the years, he has established himself as a prominent leader, gaining attention for his electoral victories against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
With the legislative meeting approaching, the stage is set for a major political transition in West Bengal, as the BJP moves closer to forming its first government in the state.
