Patna: Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor described his landmark victory in the Bankipur Assembly bypoll as a “wake up call” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying Bihar now needs leadership that prioritises education, employment and curbing migration instead of politics driven by power.
Making his electoral debut, Kishor defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by more than 19,000 votes, ending the party’s uninterrupted hold over the Bankipur constituency since 1995. The result also marked Jan Suraaj’s first ever seat in the Bihar Assembly.
Calling the verdict a significant political message, Kishor said the outcome reflected the aspirations of voters seeking a new direction for Bihar. He maintained that his party’s objective was to bring meaningful development to the state rather than pursue political positions for personal gain.
Rejecting any possibility of an alliance with established political parties, Kishor reiterated that Jan Suraaj would continue to contest elections independently. He said the party’s only alliance would remain with the people of Bihar and credited his victory to support from voters across political lines, including those dissatisfied with the BJP, Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal.
Kishor also suggested that the growing momentum created by Gen Z protests may have influenced the political atmosphere surrounding the bypoll, although he acknowledged there was no clear evidence that young voters participated in large numbers, with polling turnout remaining below 35 percent.
The Jan Suraaj leader described the result as a rejection of the current state leadership, arguing that many educated voters were seeking an alternative political vision. He also said the victory demonstrated that Bihar’s politics could move beyond traditional caste equations and established political blocs.
The Bankipur bypoll was necessitated after five time MLA Nitin Nabin vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha after becoming the BJP’s national president.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary congratulated Kishor on his victory, calling the bypoll another celebration of democracy. The result is widely seen as one of the biggest political upsets in Bihar in recent years and marks a significant milestone for the Jan Suraaj Party ahead of future electoral battles.
