ST INEZ: A tragic incident unfolded near the Ganpati Mandir in St. Inez today when two men drowned in a small pond. Despite swift rescue efforts by local authorities and bystanders, one of the men could not be saved.
The incident occurred in a popular area behind the Aapteshwar Ganpati Mandir, which locals say becomes a favored hangout spot during the rainy season. Groups of young people often gather there to party, consume alcohol, and swim in the pond despite safety risks.
Witnesses reported that the two men entered the pond in the afternoon, and trouble quickly followed. Emergency responders arrived promptly, managing to rescue one man, but the other succumbed to the water.
Authorities have cautioned the public to avoid swimming in such unsafe water bodies, especially during the monsoon when water levels can rise unpredictably and currents may be stronger. Police have also indicated that they will look into the circumstances leading up to the incident.
Residents of St. Inez expressed grief and called for better safety measures around the pond to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane has imposed a ban on access to Dudhsagar Waterfalls, other waterfalls, forests, and trekking trails due to safety concerns stemming from strong currents, sudden floods, and slippery terrain that pose serious hazards.
Authorities have urged the public to closely follow warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and local officials, advising against visiting remote or sensitive locations until weather conditions improve. The IMD predicts that intense pre-monsoon rains, along with thunder, lightning, and winds reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h, will continue.
People are advised to remain indoors whenever possible, avoid areas prone to flooding or landslides, and take necessary precautions. The administration also recommends avoiding trekking, steering clear of water bodies, and staying alert for possible disruptions in travel and essential services.
