CANACONA: In yet another series of accidents causing traffic bottlenecks, two back-to- back accidents at Karmalghat section brought the flow of traffic to a standstill causing unaccounted traffic hazards and inconveniences to the commuters on National Highway.
In the wee hours of Tuesday, a large lorry (GJ12 BV8370) carrying equally large sized Pipes coming from Karwar and proceeding towards Margao fell on its size, litrarilly spilling the large Pipes almost blocking the highway road at Karmalghat. Along with the trolley, pipes also fell on the road. So the road was closed for traffic. As the trolley and pipes also fell on the road, the highway road on either side (towards Margao and towards Karwar) was closed for traffic until police brought a Crane to move the Pipes and the Lorry to one side allowing traffic to pass on either side. No one was injured in the mishap, sources informed.
The accident had occurred at about 5 am early morning, bringing the highway traffic to a halt and the traffic resumed only after about 9 am after the truck and the Pipes were moved to one side after about a 4 hours blockade.
Highway motorists blamed the authorities for the inordinate delays as neither the Canacona Police nor Cuncolim Police (either sides of Karmalghat comes under the jurisdiction of Canacona and Cuncolim police Stations) have no Crane, and had to depend for the heavy equipment moving machinery from Margao and elsewhere.
Later in the day another vehicle bearing registration No.KA30 A-5446 fell on its side in the Gulem section of NH-66 road. A crane was again pressed into service to bring the vehicle back on the road, causing another half an hour of traffic halt to highway traffic.
According To sources, there are no fatalities in both the mishaps except some minor injuries.
