PANAJI: A major road accident on the Belagavi–Goa National Highway near Gavegali Cross on the Ramnagar–Anmod stretch claimed two lives and left three persons seriously injured in the early hours of the night, police said.
According to officials, a car bearing Andhra Pradesh registration number was travelling from Goa towards Karnataka when it attempted to overtake a poultry-laden tempo coming from the opposite direction. During the manoeuvre, the car reportedly collided head-on with the vehicle, leading to a severe impact.
The tempo, registered in Goa and reportedly based in the Canacona (Quepem) route, was transporting broiler chickens from Karnataka towards Goa when the accident occurred. The collision was so intense that two occupants of the car died on the spot, while the driver and a couple travelling in the tempo sustained serious injuries.
Police said the accident took place around 1.30 am, triggering panic in the area. The injured were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A case has been registered at Ramnagar Police Station, and further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the crash.
